Oxcarbazepine dosage

Your prescriber will determine the appropriate Oxcarbazepine dosage that you need to employ during your therapy. Typically, the treatment starts with initial doses of 600 mg per day, and may be increased over time. Whenever appropriate, the dosage is increased by 300 mg; however the increase may not occur more often than once every three days. The normal maintenance dose that should be attained is of 1200 mg per day. In the case of children, the dosage is determined based on body weight, and should not exceed 600 mg per day.

As the Oxcarbazepine dosage is determined based on several factors which are particular to your case, it is very likely that your dosage will differ from that of other patients'. As such, it is strongly recommended that you only take the medication dosage that has been prescribed to you; do not employ the medication dosage prescribed to another patient, as this may cause the therapy to not yield the expected results.

Oxcarbazepine overdose

You should never exceed the recommended Oxcarbazepine daily dosage. An overdose with this drug may cause severe long and short term consequences and in severe cases it may prove lethal. As such, if you suspect that you have taken too much of this medicine it is strongly suggested that you contact the local poisons center or go to the nearest medical facility to obtain emergency assistance.

However if this happens when it is almost time for another intake of the medicine, it is best that you completely skip the missed dose and continue with your regular intake program. Do not double a dose in order to make up for a missed one.

In order to avoid accidentally missing any of your Oxcarbazepine intakes you should check with your personal physician and set up an intake schedule that suits your agenda and life style. Taking the medicine at around the same time every day helps reduce the risk of forgetting about any doses.
