Guaifenesin:

An expectorant that also has some muscle relaxing action. It is used in many cough preparations.

Indication: Used to assist the expectoration of phlegm from the airways in acute respiratory tract infections.

Okas-Q (Guaifenesin) is an expectorant which increases the output of phlegm (sputum) and bronchial secretions by reducing adhesiveness and surface tension. The increased flow of less viscous secretions promotes ciliary action and changes a dry, unproductive cough to one that is more productive and less frequent. By reducing the viscosity and adhesiveness of secretions, Okas-Q (Guaifenesin) increases the efficacy of the mucociliary mechanism in removing accumulated secretions from the upper and lower airway.

Phenylpropanolamine:

Okas-Q (Phenylpropanolamine) has been withdrawn in Canada. In November 2000, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory against the use of the drug.

Indication: For the treatment of nasal congestion, control of urinary incontinence, priapism and obesity.

Okas-Q (Phenylpropanolamine) (PPA), a sympathomimetic agent structurally similar to pseudoephedrine, is used to treat nasal congestion. Okas-Q (Phenylpropanolamine) is found in appetite suppressant formulations and with guaifenesinin in cough-cold formulations. In 2000, the FDA requested that all drug companies discontinue marketing products containing Okas-Q (Phenylpropanolamine), due to an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke in women who used Okas-Q (Phenylpropanolamine).
