Memantine is a kind of drug called N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists. This drug protects NMDA receptors in the brain against high level of glutamate. High level of glutamate may result to brain degeneration.
This medication is used in treating the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease from moderately severe to severe. This drug should increase your capacity to think and remember. This drug could also be used in other purposes not mentioned here.
Talk to your doctor first before taking this medicine you have severe kidney disease, seizure disorder or history of seizure, and an allergy to Memantine or other similar drugs. The symptoms of allergic reaction are swelling of the face, lips or tongue which may make it difficult to swallow or breathe; itching, skin rash or hives and asthma, wheezing or shortness of breath. In case you miss to take a dose of Memantine, skip the missed dose, wait until its time for the next dose, and only take the regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication. In case, you have doubts or do not know what to do, contact your doctor at the soonest possible time.
Some of the common side effects of Memantine are dizziness, confusion, tiredness, headache and seeing, hearing or feeling things that are not there. Some side effects that are not mentioned here may occur. Talk to your doctor if you experience unusual or bothersome side effects.
Some drugs could affect Memantine. Talk to your doctor if you are taking medicines used for Epilepsy or fits; irregular beating of your heart; leg cramps or to relax muscles; cough, cold and flu; urinary tract infections; stomach cramps or spasms, or travel sickness; Parkinson's disease; certain mental and emotional conditions; smoking addiction; anaesthetic agents; or stomach ulcers or reflux. Some drugs that are not mentioned here may also affect this drug. Talk to your doctor if you are taking other medicines or over-the-counter medicines such as vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
