Lithofalk uses

Lithofalk consists of Chenodeoxycholic Acid, Ursodeoxycholic Acid.

Chenodeoxycholic Acid:

Lithofalk (Chenodeoxycholic Acid) (or Chenodiol) is an epimer of ursodeoxycholic acid (DB01586). Lithofalk (Chenodeoxycholic Acid) is a bile acid naturally found in the body. It works by dissolving the cholesterol that makes gallstones and inhibiting production of cholesterol in the liver and absorption in the intestines, which helps to decrease the formation of gallstones. It can also reduce the amount of other bile acids that can be harmful to liver cells when levels are elevated.

Indication: Chenodiol is indicated for patients with radiolucent stones in well-opacifying gallbladders, in whom selective surgery would be undertaken except for the presence of increased surgical risk due to systemic disease or age. Chenodiol will not dissolve calcified (radiopaque) or radiolucent bile pigment stones.

It acts by reducing levels of cholesterol in the bile, helping gallstones that are made predominantly of cholesterol to dissolve. Lithofalk (Chenodeoxycholic Acid) is ineffective with stones of a high calcium or bile acid content.

Ursodeoxycholic Acid:

Lithofalk (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is an epimer of chenodeoxycholic acid (DB06777). It is a mammalian bile acid found first in the bear and is apparently either a precursor or a product of chenodeoxycholate. Its administration changes the composition of bile and may dissolve gallstones. It is used as a cholagogue and choleretic.

Indication: The drug reduces cholesterol absorption and is used to dissolve (cholesterol) gallstones in patients who want an alternative to surgery.

Ursodiol (also known as Lithofalk (Ursodeoxycholic Acid)) is one of the secondary bile acids, which are metabolic byproducts of intestinal bacteria. Primary bile acids are produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. When secreted into the colon, primary bile acids can be metabolized into secondary bile acids by intestinal bacteria. Primary and secondary bile acids help the body digest fats. Lithofalk (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) helps regulate cholesterol by reducing the rate at which the intestine absorbs cholesterol molecules while breaking up micelles containing cholesterol. Because of this property, Lithofalk (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is used to treat gall stones non-surgically.
