Pharmacological action

Emsam is an almost near-to-white crystalline powder that is round, convex, scored, and uncoated tablet. Emsam is freely soluble in water. Emsam is used to treat Parkinson's disease, a disease associated with low levels of dopamine in your brain. The question how really Emsam works is not known but it is believed to prevent the breakdown of dopamine in your brain. After levedopa or carbidopa therapy begins to deteriorate, Emsam is usually added to a treatment regimen.

Why is Emsam prescribed?

Emsam is mainly used to handle the stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control of Parkinson's disease. It can be used as monotherapy in the early phases of the disease and as adjunctive therapy with levodopa. Emsam is also used to handle some muscular conditions that are caused by certain drugs such as Chlorpromazine, Fluphenazine (Prolixin), Perphenazine (Trilafon), and other more. Dosage and administration

    Emsam contraindications

    This medication is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to this drug.

    Emsam is contraindicated for use with meperidine. This contraindication is often extended to other opioids.
