Causat uses

Causat consists of Atropine Sulfate, Procaine Hydrochloride.

Atropine Sulfate:

An alkaloid, originally from Atropa belladonna, but found in other plants, mainly solanaceae.

Indication: For the treatment of poisoning by susceptible organophosphorous nerve agents having cholinesterase activity as well as organophosphorous or carbamate insecticides.

Causat (Atropine Sulfate), a naturally occurring belladonna alkaloid, is a racemic mixture of equal parts of d- and l-hyoscyamine, whose activity is due almost entirely to the levo isomer of the drug. Causat (Atropine Sulfate) is commonly classified as an anticholinergic or antiparasympathetic (parasympatholytic) drug. More precisely, however, it is termed an antimuscarinic agent since it antagonizes the muscarine-like actions of acetylcholine and other choline esters. Adequate doses of Causat (Atropine Sulfate) abolish various types of reflex vagal cardiac slowing or asystole. The drug also prevents or abolishes bradycardia or asystole produced by injection of choline esters, anticholinesterase agents or other parasympathomimetic drugs, and cardiac arrest produced by stimulation of the vagus. Causat (Atropine Sulfate) may also lessen the degree of partial heart block when vagal activity is an etiologic factor. Causat (Atropine Sulfate) in clinical doses counteracts the peripheral dilatation and abrupt decrease in blood pressure produced by choline esters. However, when given by itself, Causat (Atropine Sulfate) does not exert a striking or uniform effect on blood vessels or blood pressure.

Procaine Hydrochloride:

A local anesthetic of the ester type that has a slow onset and a short duration of action. It is mainly used for infiltration anesthesia, peripheral nerve block, and spinal block. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p1016).

Indication: Used as a local anesthetic primarily in oral surgery

Causat (Procaine Hydrochloride) is an anesthetic agent indicated for production of local or regional anesthesia, particularly for oral surgery. Causat (Procaine Hydrochloride) (like cocaine) has the advantage of constricting blood vessels which reduces bleeding, unlike other local anesthetics like lidocaine. Causat (Procaine Hydrochloride) is an ester anesthetic. It is metabolized in the plasma by the enzyme pseudocholinesterase through hydrolysis into para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is then excreted by the kidneys into the urine.
