Warfarin information

Warfarin is an anti-coagulant or a medicine which helps in the thinning of the blood.

Warfarin indications

This medication is indicated for the reduction of blood clotting essential for the prevention of heart attacks, stroke and the blocking of arteries and veins.

Warfarin may also be prescribed to treat other medical conditions aside from the ones mentioned above.

Warfarin warnings

Due to the anti clotting property of Warfarin, it should be administered with care and preferably under doctor's monitoring for patients who have the following medical conditions:

Have recently had surgery

Ill with stomach ulcers, or any other forms of bleeding

Have had stroke caused by bleeding in the brain

Have had aneurysm

Have had spinal fracture or had been exposed to lumbar block anesthesia

Have bacterial endocarditis, pericarditis, and pericardial effusion.

Warfarin may also not be strongly recommended for patients with the following medical conditions:

Kidney problems

Liver diseases

Hypertension

Have congenital and or hereditary Protein C or Protein S deficiency

Diabetes

Polycythemia Vera

Vasculitis

Congestive heart failure

Collagen vascular disorder

Thyroidal problems

High cholesterol

Cancer

Vitamin K deficiency

On the process of surgery

Taking antibiotics to treat infection

Warfarin and pregnancy

This medicine is belong to the drugs categorized under Pregnancy Category X which means that taking Warfarin may cause harm to the unborn, cause birth defects and birth problems.

However, this drug is not detected on the breast milk. But is would still be safe and wise to consult your doctor first before deciding to breast feed when taking Warfarin.

Warfarin intake guidelines

This product must be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor, if the instructions given by your doctor are unclear, you must verify them from a medical authority such as a pharmacist or nurse.

Each dose of Warfarin must be taken with a full glass of water. The medication should be taken at about the same time of each day and it could be taken with or without food.

Regular monitoring of blood such as PT and INR tests should be performed regularly to monitor the need to increase or decrease dosage of Warfarin.

Never take more or less of this drug. Always follow the prescribed dosage for intake.

Avoid abrupt changes in your diet. The consumption of Vitamin K may significantly decrease the effects of the medicine. Vitamin K can be mostly obtained from spinach, Swiss Chard, coriander, collards, and cabbages.

Warfarin dosage

The dosage for Warfarin intake must be obtained from a doctor. The doctor may still perform necessary blood tests and other examinations before prescribing the exact dosage.

Warfarin overdose

Overdose of the drug may be characterized by:

Bruising

Visibility of small broken blood vessels under the skin

Excessive bleeding from cuts and wounds

Bleeding on the gums

Blood on stool, urine or vomitus

Excessive menstrual bleeding

Overdose of Warfarin may become fatal especially if left untreated as they may result to hemorrhage. Immediately seek medical attention if any of these symptoms occur.

Warfarin missed dose

The missed dose of Warfarin must be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, forego the missed dose and wait for the next dose.

Warfarin side effects

Taking Warfarin may entail some serious side effects such as:

allergic reactions characterized by hives, swelling of lips, throat and mouth and the closing of throat passage.

black, bloody and tarry stools

blood in urine and vomitus

coughing of blood

bleeding gums, and sores in the mouth

decrease in the amount of urine

purple discoloration of toes and fingernails

easy bruising

sudden leg and foot pains

unusual bleeding and heavy menstrual periods

If you experience any of the mentioned side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Some of the less serious side effects may include:

excessive retention of gas and bloating

diarrhea

nausea

stomach and digestive problems

decrease in appetite and unusual weight loss

If you experience any of the following side effects, talk to your doctor immediately. These less serious side effects are more likely to occur when you are taking Warfarin.
